Different Modes of Vaginal Birth

There are different modes of Vaginal deliveries which may be recommended depending on the patients and babies health.

Natural Vaginal Delivery

Vaginal birth is the most common and highly preferred mode of delivery for most women. It’s a low-risk way to deliver a baby. In a vaginal birth, your uterus contracts in order to dilate your cervix. The baby goes through the birth canal and is delivered through the vagina.

The labor can initiate on its own or require an induction. We have the facility to induce you for labor and perform a vaginal birth. Sometimes, vacuums and forceps are used to get the baby out naturally.

Benefits of Natural Vaginal Delivery

Vaginal birth has many advantages for the mother and the baby. Here are a few:

  • Shorter recovery
  • Lower risk of complications in subsequent pregnancies
  • Mother can begin lactation within the first hour after birth
  • Lower risk of respiratory problems in the baby

Risks

If you have a high-risk pregnancy or the baby is in a position where delivering naturally can pose a threat to the mother’s and the baby’s life, then we perform a c-section.

Here’s what makes vaginal delivery unsafe:

  • Failed induction or the labor doesn’t progress requiring a c-section
  • Irregular fetal heart rate
  • Vaginal tear
  • Hemorrhage
  • Postpartum preeclampsia

Procedure

The procedure of delivery begins with labor that either initiates on its own or may be induced. During labor, you get contractions that open the cervix gradually up to 10 cm. When you are fully dilated, you will feel intense contractions, often accompanied by the urge to poop.

Our team will guide you in pushing to deliver the baby. After birth, the placenta is delivered. It may take a few more pushes to have the placenta delivered through the vagina.

Post Care Instructions

You can go home the same or the next day after a vaginal birth. Expect some soreness around the vagina, but it should resolve within 2-3 weeks. It’s advised to eat a high-fiber diet and drink plenty of water to speed up recovery.

Painless Delivery: Types of Labor Pain Relief Methods

Vaginal delivery is painful. Contractions might feel like mild period cramps in the beginning, but they get intense gradually. Fortunately, painless options are available. We have multiple pain relief options for patients who can’t handle labor.

  • Epidural and Spinal Blocks: These are administered in an injectable form into your spine to numb your waist and the lower portion. Both offer instant relief, and the effects may last until delivery.
  • Epidural: We numb your lower back and inject a needle into the epidural space. We insert a catheter through the needle and give the required dose of anesthesia to relieve pain. The procedure takes 10-15 minutes.
  • Spinal Block: The anesthesia is injected into the dural sac, giving instant pain relief.
  • Non-Medical Pain Relief Methods: To ease discomfort, you can also try acupuncture, water birth, hypnobirthing, breathing techniques, and meditation.

Episiotomy: What You Need to Know

Episiotomy is a small incision made in the perineum to make the vaginal opening big enough for the baby to come through easily (perineum is the area between your vagina and the anus).

It’s not needed in every case and the gynecologist will use a local anesthetic injection to numb the area before making the incision so you won’t feel any pain.

When Is It Needed

  • You can’t push due to exhaustion from prolonged labor
  • Baby is large
  • Baby is in a breech position
  • The baby is in distress

Healing from an episiotomy may take 2 weeks to a month, depending on the level of tear. You might feel pain and discomfort until the incision has healed completely. Pain during intercourse is also normal.

Cold ice packs can be used to massage the area and relieve soreness. Witch hazel can also prevent irritation.

Vacuum-Assisted Birth: When and Why It’s Used

Vacuum-assisted birth involves a vacuum cup that attaches securely to the baby’s head and promotes easier and faster delivery.

It’s recommended when the baby doesn’t get down the birth canal on its own.

Indications

  • Prolonged labor
  • Labor has stopped progressing
  • Mother is unable to push due to exhaustion
  • Baby seems to be in distress

Vacuums are used for emergency delivery when the baby is stuck in an oxygen-deprived environment and must be delivered quickly.

Risks and Complications

  • Scalp edema
  • Bruising
  • Postpartum bleeding in the mother
  • Vaginal tear
