Sonography Centre in Mulund West
Ultrasound testing is the safest, most painless, and one of the most popular diagnostic procedures for detecting any abnormality in a patient’s body.
Its non-invasive nature makes it an ideal choice for patients who require an accurate diagnosis without having to endure pain.
Ultrasound imaging uses high-frequency sound waves to generate a picture of your internal organs on the monitor. A professional gynecologist then interprets these such as Dr. Kavya, at sonography centre in Mulund West, Dr. Shetty’s Clinic.
Further testing might be required based on the results, but ultrasound alone is usually effective for diagnostic purposes.

All USG Scans done at our Ultrasound Diagnostic center in Mulund
Contrary to popular belief, USG scans aren’t confined to the reproductive organs. They can detect problems with your breasts, thyroid glands, kidneys, bladder, joints, and prostate (to name a few).
We’ve highlighted the different types of ultrasound scans and when they are needed. Let’s take a look.
Abdominal Ultrasound test:
It covers your gallbladder, liver, kidneys, pancreas, and spleen. The doctor applies a gel all over your abdomen and moves a transducer to collect pictures of your internal organs.
Pelvic Ultrasound test:
It covers the pelvic floor of the women and the prostate in men. Pelvic ultrasound examines a woman’s ovaries, uterus, fallopian tubes, cervix, and other parts.
Breast Ultrasound:
A breast ultrasound can be used if mammogram results are abnormal or this test shows inaccurate results. It’s often used to differentiate between normal fluid-filled cysts and cancerous masses.
2D Echo:
This test is recommended for patients with heart conditions. It detects congenital heart defects, irregular heartbeats, heart valve function, and the functioning of the other parts (chambers and blood vessels).
Ultrasound Diagnostic test for Pregnancy
Dr. Kavya prescribes USG scans at different stages of pregnancy to check maternal and fetal health. Here are the most popular scans that every pregnant woman needs.
Early Pregnancy Scan
The early pregnancy or dating scan is conducted between the 6th and 9th week of pregnancy. The test takes the vital measurements of the fetus, based on which Dr. Kavya gives you an estimated delivery date. The test also shows whether you are carrying a single live fetus or multiple. Early pregnancy scans can also rule out the possibility of ectopic pregnancy and other complications.
NT Scan
A Nuchal Translucency (NT) scan is performed between the 11th and 14th weeks and is usually conducted with blood tests to provide a more accurate diagnosis. The scan measures the fluid level at the back of the baby’s neck. NT scan results combined with the maternal age and the blood tests show the risk of Edward Syndrome, Down’s Syndrome, and Patau’s Syndrome in the baby.
Anomaly Scan
The Level 2 scan is recommended in the second trimester (between 18 and 20 weeks) to check for fetal structural abnormalities. This scan thoroughly evaluates your baby’s vital organs, limbs, and face. An Anomaly scan is also used to assess the placenta position.
Interval Growth Scan
Another scan conducted between the 28th and 32nd weeks of pregnancy is the growth scan, which checks fetal weight, size, and growth.
Color Doppler
A color Doppler is another pregnancy test used to measure blood flow in the mother and the baby. It’s highly recommended for women diagnosed with gestational diabetes and hypertension. Any medical condition that could restrict blood flow to the umbilical cord must be monitored closely. Color Doppler is one such way to ensure proper blood circulation to the fetus.
Other Gynec Ultrasound Tests
Apart from pregnancy scans, USG screening is needed for several other gynecology-related issues. Let’s explore the common options:
Follicular Scans
If you are considering IVF or assisted reproductive technology for conception, the doctor will recommend follicular scans to check if the ovarian follicles have ruptured and released an egg.
Basically, the scan is used to track the growth of the ovarian follicles.
Sonosalpingography
Sonosalpingography is another ultrasound test that’s used to diagnose the cause of infertility. It can detect blocked fallopian tubes, which is one of the most common causes of infertility in women.
2D and 3D Ultrasounds
2D ultrasound can detect most uterine anomalies that might be the cause of infertility for women. However, these ultrasound tests lack depth.
It can be used to detect fibroids, polyps, and endometrial thickness. If you want a comprehensive evaluation of the uterine cavity, consider 3D ultrasounds.
These can detect complex abnormalities like septate or bicornuate uterus and other structural anomalies that can lead to infertility.
When is Ultrasound Recommended?
USG testing is the most common, noninvasive testing for pregnant women. Before ordering an ultrasound, Dr. Kavya will ask about your medical history and existing conditions and conduct a physical exam.
The test can detect a vast range of medical issues, including but not limited to bladder cancer, kidney stones, pelvic organ prolapse, ectopic pregnancy, PCOS, ovarian cysts, ovarian torsions, uterine fibroids, polyps, endometriosis, and other uterine issues.
