Who’s a Good Candidate for IUI?

If you are also considering intrauterine insemination, meet Dr. Kavya Rao at IUI centre in Mumbai, Dr. Shetty’s Clinic to determine whether you are a good candidate for the procedure. She will explain the treatment procedure, the success rate, and the after-care plan.

IUI works for couples who have been unable to conceive after trying unprotected sexual intercourse for over a year.

The treatment is most commonly recommended for couples who have:

Male Factor Infertility

Issues in the male semen, such as low sperm count, poor motility, inappropriate shape, or poor sperm quality, can lead to male infertility.

IUI separates healthy sperm from the defective ones, increasing the odds of the healthy sperm fertilizing a woman’s egg.

Donor Sperm

IUI is commonly used to achieve pregnancy in women who plan to use donor sperm. If you are single or have a partner with male factor infertility, you can use donor sperm to conceive. The procedure is carried out with Intrauterine Insemination (IUI).

Semen Allergy

Semen contains certain proteins, which may irritate your vagina when the semen touches the skin. Although it rarely happens, it can be a possible cause of infertility in some women.

In IUI, the proteins that cause allergic reactions are washed out, and the seminal liquid is injected into the woman’s uterus. This protects you from reaction while increasing your chances of getting pregnant.

Unexplained Infertility

If the doctors can’t pinpoint the cause of your infertility, they recommend IUI with ovarian stimulation medication.

Let’s discuss the process of IUI in short:

Preparing for IUI

Physical Examination

Dr. Kavya orders bloodwork, a semen analysis test, an ultrasound, and other imaging tests before starting the IUI procedure. This is done to ensure you are fit for pregnancy.

Ovulation

You need to watch for the signs of ovulation. That’s when the sperm is administered into your body to increase the chances of fertilization.

You can use at-home ovulation predictor kits to determine the hormone surge that indicates ovulation. Some women need Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) shots to stimulate their ovaries to produce one or multiple eggs at a time.

Collect the Semen Sample

Your partner’s semen sample is collected around the same time you ovulate. Or, you can choose to have the donor’s sperm. These are thawed and washed thoroughly to collect good-quality sperm for fertilization.

During the Procedure

IUI is scheduled on the day you ovulate. The doctor will monitor the egg production and maturation within 12-15 days before your next menstrual cycle.

If the egg matures and releases normally, they will perform IUI on the day the egg reaches the fallopian tube.

Here’s what happens during the procedure in IUI centre in Mumbai, Dr. Shetty’s Clinic:

  • A speculum is used to stretch open your vagina.
  • The doctor inserts a catheter (attached to the vial filled with semen sample) into your uterus through the cervical opening.
  • They release the semen into the uterus and remove the catheter.
  • They remove the speculum.

Once the sperm is successfully released into your uterus, the doctor will ask you to lie on your back for 10-15 minutes. You might also receive progesterone medication to prepare your uterine lining for implantation.

After that, you can go home and resume your routine chores. Mild spotting and cramping are normal after the procedure.

You can take a pregnancy test within 12-14 days after insemination.

It’s possible to conceive with assisted reproductive technology if the cause of your infertility is endometriosis, poor-quality sperm, or you are diagnosed with unexplained infertility.
